Independent-minded Republicans Provide Hope for Bipartisan Oversight, Common Ground

One hope, however slim, in 2017-18 lies in independent-minded Republican senators who could ask tough questions and not rubber-stamp Donald Trump’s nominees or agenda, who take seriously the role of Congress to provide checks and balances on the executive branch as prescribed in the Constitution.

I think of Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake of Arizona,  Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Richard Burr of North Carolina, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Orrin Hatch and Mike Lee from Utah, Susan Collins of Maine, Rob Portman of Ohio, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, and Mario Rubio of Florida. They have shown independence or skepticism about Trump in the past.

These 10 GOP senators, compared with 48 Democrats, could provide a formidable challenge to President Trump.
